Undergraduate entry requirements/First cycle studies (Bachelors)

If you are planning to study in Germany at the undergraduate level, below are the general admission requirements for international students. You will need to visit your university of choice’s website for other requirements that are not stated here.

If you want to study at a German university, you will have to show a “Hochschulzugangsberechtigung” – or “university entrance qualification”. This university entrance qualification is basically a school-leaving certificate/result. This result will qualify you for university study. If your secondary-school certificate is not up to standard for study in Germany, you will have to attend a foundation course (“Studienkolleg”) before you are allowed to enrol.

German

For German language proficiency results, any of the results received at one of the following examinations is accepted:

  • German Language Proficiency Examination for Admission to Higher Education for Foreign Applicants (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber– DSH). You can take it at your university in Germany.
  • Test of German as a Foreign Language for foreign applicants – Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische Studienbewerber– TestDaF.
  • You can also take the German language examination as part of the Feststellungsprüfung (assessment test) at a Studienkolleg.

English

Additionally, you may also be requested to take a course in English if you don’t have the necessary level of command to successfully complete the selected study program. You should therefore check with your host university if your current level of English is sufficient.

Akademische Prüfstelle (APS)

Student from China must have their certificates pre-checked by the academic verification office of the German embassy in Beijing (Akademische Prüfstelle (APS) der Deutschen Botschaft in Beijing) before you can apply for higher education in Germany. This process simplifies the application at German universities and accelerates the issuing of a VISA.

Cost of Living in Germany

The cost of living in Germany is cheap and affordable. You need to know that education is not completely free in Germany as students will need to budget for their own living expenses.

It is estimated at 600euros which covers the cost of accommodation, food, travels, books, stationeries, health care, registration fees etc.

So, in one year the estimated cost of living is put at 8000 euro. This is an estimate amount; it could be more or less. It depends on the individual involved since different people have different lifestyles. Also, you must obtain a visa.

But before it is granted, you will need to show proof that you can afford to take care of yourself while studying in Germany.

Two ways of doing this are:

  • Open a German blocked account to the tune of 8000euro
  • Present a sponsor’s letter obtained from a friend or relative in Germany who’s willing to take care of your living expenses in Germany.

Please, kindly visit a German embassy in your home country to get more information on how to obtain a visa.

Tuition fees in German Universities

The tuition fees for German universities are cheap and affordable especially when compared to countries like UK, Australia or USA. The tuition fees vary from program to program and are estimated at 500 Euro per semester.

This is not the case with private universities as their tuition fees are higher. We still advice you to check this out with your desired institution.
